Favignana Quarry Island. Mediterranean landscapes between description and transformation

2022

The essay takes a critical look at part of the extensive research on the Mediterranean landscape conducted by the authors, particularly on the architecture of the quarry landscape in Sicily. The case study investigated concerns the island of Favignana and the complex relationship that the quarry landscape has represented in the relations between this island of the Egadi archipelago and the Mediterranean basin. The essay adopts five keywords that represent many access tools for an anthropogeographical understanding of the island. The essay interprets Favignana as an island of wind and water through geography. But it extends its dimension to architecture, looking at its landscape as a single …

Progettare città nel tempo della metamorfosi

2013

2019

Performance art (like Orlan’s “Carnal Art”) involves artist body in the performance itself and it is based on a clear phenomenological assumption: we “do not have” a body, but we “are” our body, we are our “sculpture”. Fascinated by the enigmas of change, Aesthetics has sought to address the metaphysical question concerning metamorphosis and the problem of identity persistence in change; the solution has been found for centuries in the opposition between essence and appearance: as highlighted by fantastic literature (Ovid, Apuleius, Kafka), in metamorphosis the “substance” remains unchanged and only appearance (or accident) changes. However, the reflection carried out by Catherine Malabou o…

La matrice della forma. Riflessioni sui vincoli metamorfici fra Estetica e Morfologia

2017

2018

Rethinking metamorphosis as rebirth of the Self opens the possibility of conceiving the subjectivity according to its plasticity, as the new perspectives of the morphological and morphogenetic investigations suggest. The ontological trait of the plasticity of the subject shows us that the Self is a continuous metamorphic activity, which is properly an activity of individualization of the identity of the Self. Following its natural metamorphic way of being and searching for its identity, the Self is revealed to be a transindividual form of life, constituting in the relationship with other transindividual forms of life and their counter-intentionality.

A functional analysis of ACP-20, an adult-specific cuticular protein gene from the beetle Tenebrio. Role of an intronic sequence in transcriptional a…

2004

0962-1075 (Print) Comparative Study Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; A gene encoding the adult cuticular protein ACP-20 was isolated in Tenebrio. It consists of three exons interspersed by two introns, intron 1 interrupting the signal peptide. To understand the regulatory mechanisms of ACP-20 expression, ACP-20 promoter-luciferase reporter gene constructs were transfected into cultured pharate adult wing epidermis. Transfection assays needed the presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone, confirming that ACP-20 is up-regulated by ecdysteroids. Analysis of 5' deletion constructs revealed that three regions are necessary for high levels of transcription. Interaction experiments between i…

Drosophila Food-Associated Pheromones: Effect of Experience, Genotype and Antibiotics on Larval Behavior

2016

International audience; Animals ubiquitously use chemical signals to communicate many aspects of their social life. These chemical signals often consist of environmental cues mixed with species-specific signals-pheromones-emitted by conspecifics. During their life, insects can use pheromones to aggregate, disperse, choose a mate, or find the most suitable food source on which to lay eggs. Before pupariation, larvae of several Drosophila species migrate to food sources depending on their composition and the presence of pheromones. Some pheromones derive from microbiota gut activity and these food-associated cues can enhance larval attraction or repulsion. To explore the mechanisms underlying…
